More about Boston

Boston is the capital city of Massachusetts and is the largest city in this state. It is among the oldest cities in the United States and has a large cultural and economic impact on the New England region. The population of the city according to the census held in 2010 was 617,594 people. This city is the anchor to the metropolitan area referred to as Greater Boston, which has a population of 4.5 million people and ranks at the tenth position among the largest metropolitan areas in the nation.

The city of Boston was founded on the Shawmut Peninsula in 1630 by English Puritan colonists. Several major events have taken place in this city during the later years of the eighteenth century. They include the Boston Tea Party and the Boston Massacre. Some early battles fought during the American Revolution like the Siege of Boston and the Battle of Bunker Hill took place within the city and its surrounding areas.

The area of the city has gone beyond the Shawmut Peninsula through municipal annexation and land reclamation. Boston turned into an important manufacturing center and shipping port after America attained independence from England. The rich history of this city is one of the attractions that bring large numbers of tourists to the city annually. For example, the Faneuil
Hall attracts more than twenty million people each year.

There are many universities and colleges in this city and its surroundings and they have turned it into an international center for medicine and higher education. The economy of this city is also based on electronics, engineering, high technology, finance and research. For this reason, Boston is a major financial center, which ranks at the 12th position in the Z/Yen top twenty financial centers in the world. It is also ranked in the first position for innovation both in North
America and in the world.

The city has numerous cultural roots just like those of the New England region such as the dialect of Eastern New England, which is referred to as Boston English and the regional cuisine that emphasizes on dairy products, salt and seafood. There are several ornate theaters in this city and they include the Boston Opera House, Cutler Majestic Theater, the Colonial Theater, the Orpheum Theater and Citi Performing Arts Center. The organizations for the performing arts that are renowned include Boston Ballet, OperaBoston, Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Lyric Opera Company.

The major yearly events held in this city include First Night, which is held on the eve of New Year’s Day and the Boston Arts Festival that is held in the Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park. The city also hosts other events in the 4th of July period, which include Harborfest festivities, which last for a week and the Boston Pops concert.

Boston also has major art museums such as Isabella Stewart Gardner, the Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Science and Boston’s Children’s Museum among others. You can visit this city and enjoy free music concerts. You just need to find out where the free concerts are being held at. The city hosts many free concerts mainly because of the colleges that specialize in music
performance.

In order to know where concerts are being held, you can look at the events calendar found at the websites of schools. You can refine your research by finding the colleges that specialize in the kind of music that you want to listen to. For instance, if you are fan of contemporary music, jazz or other music that is rooted in the culture of African Americans, you can check out for events hosted by the Berklee College of Music.

You can also find free concerts in the Trinity Church located at Copley Square. The active music program of Trinity Church features choral performances, virtuoso performances and special events. For free summer concerts in Boston, you can visit the Boston Esplanade, which is the site of numerous free concerts, movies and a two-day regatta.
